Society of St Vincent De Paul (SSVP)
   
 
The mission of the Society of St Vincent De Paul is to seek the love of God by serving the poor and needy. To alleviate the plight of the underprivileged through financial aids and rations distribution, especially regular home visitations.

The "Conference of Charity," from which the Society of St. Vincent de Paul came, was founded in Paris in April, 1833 by a group of young Catholics. The principal founder was a man of twenty years of age, hailed from Lyons, named Frederic Ozanam.

The Society of St Vincent de Paul (SSVP), one of the oldest charitable social and humanitarian organisations, is seen today as a huge international movement of the apostolate of charity and social action. The Society's purpose is to provide direct aid to those who suffer, and to help individuals reduce and even eliminate the causes of the suffering themselves.

SSVP of Singapore was formed in 1951. To date, the Society has grown to a total of 29 Conferences with total membership of about 700. Except for Cathedral of the Good Shepherd, there is one Conference in each Church.

The 29 Conferences are organised into 5 Particular Councils (City, East, North, West and Serangoon) which are coordinated by the National Council.

The Society also runs the St Vincent Home which is jointly funded by SSVP and Catholic Welfare Services. It is located at Waterloo Street and has been a sheltered home since 1980 to ambulant, destitute Singaporeans and Permanent Residents.

SSVP serves the poor and destitute in Singapore. These include cash grants, food rations, medical bills and education.

Some other activities of SSVP include transporting the sick to seek medical treatment, organising family outings and excursions during school holidays and bringing festive cheers during Christmas, Easter and Chinese New Year for the poor.

In supporting children from poor families, SSVP helps meet educational expenses up to tertiary level.

SSVP also provide additional aid to secure employment from other welfare agencies for those out of work.

SSVP was formed in 1951 and officially registered as a Society in 1961 (RoS Number 0179/1955WEL). It is a registered Charity from 1986 (Charity No. 00300). It is a member of National Council of Social Services (NCSS)
