SPI has been conducting courses on the Bible, Church teachings, pastoral training programmes, catechetical workshops etc. It began in 1978 under the direction of the then Rev Fr Nicholas Chia (present Archbishop).
The Institute merged with the Catechetical Office of the Catechetical Commission, and the Biblical Apostolate in September 1992. Since July 2000, SPI has been situated at its present location at the Catholic Archdiocesan Education Centre, 2 Highland Road in the Upper Serangoon area.
