Advent 2007 Charity Projects at Parishes

CATHEDRAL OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD - CARE
As we prepare for the coming of Jesus this Advent, we are called especially to love and help the less fortunate in our midst. To do so, the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd has joined some of the other parishes across Singapore in championing an Advent project to support the work of a Catholic organisation with our time, money and prayer. Our church has adopted the non-profit organisation Catholic AIDS Response Effort (CARE) as our Advent project.

In the weekend of 1 & 2 December, donation envelopes for CARE will be given to parishioners after communion. These can be collected in the following week or mailed back to the parishes.

About Catholic AIDS Response Effort (CARE)
Established in June 1992, CARE aims to reach out to abandoned, marginalised and destitute people with HIV/AIDS (PWAs) and their families, regardless of race, religion or social standing.

Since inception, CARE has taken on a low profile. This has been due in part to the spiritual and conservative nature of the group; and more importantly, the associated stigma, discrimination and sensitivities of dealing with patients and the patients' families and friends.

Being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS can sound like the death knell. Many PWAs go through long stages of denial and anger, are fearful, lonely and depressed. Apart from the fear of death, there is the fear of rejection, guilt and of the realities of coping with the financial, social and practical aspects of the disease. After a long (for some, short) and painful struggle with the debilitating and expensive disease, many PWAs, reduced to skin and bones, leave this world with depleted bank accounts, broken relationships, despair and disillusionment.

CARE believes that their lot is not to judge but to love. "Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me." (Matt 25:40)

Objectives
To raise the level of compassion and awareness of PWAs amongst our
community.
To reach out and support PWAs and their families through individual or
group counselling and other programmes.
To work with the relevant authorities to provide care and support to PWAs.
To provide life skills programmes to enhance PWA's confidence and self
sufficiency.
To provide pastoral counselling and support to PWAs and their families
