Helping orphans in Cambodia
Our community is supporting an orphanage in Kampong Thom, Cambodia. Because we as community, which is subsidised by the German Catholic Church, cannot bear the total cost of this project alone, we strive to establish contacts and to find sponsors. We do this in various ways:

Several members of our community sponsor children of the orphanage. With the money they give all the children in the orphanage receive private tuition, food and clothes, as well as, if needed, vocational training. Good education is of utmost importance.

Members of our community have supplied the orphanage with computers, so that the children can have IT-lessons.

Members of our community sponsor teachers, librarians and a nurse.

The building of a house which holds the orphanage's library has been financed.

Through generous donations from Germany and Switzerland the orphanage was connected to the town's water supply so that a reliable supply of water is guaranteed. Before, water was available out of wells which went dry during the dry season.

Some of our confirmation candidates spent a week in the orphanage and renovated two rooms together with the older children of the orphanage.

We have recently started a project called “Solar Energy for Kampong Thom”. This project aims at supplying the orphanage with solar energy. We will combine in this project the necessity of a self-sustaining supply of electricity with an educational concept for the orphanage. We plan in a first step to supply a building or some rooms with solar energy. The solar system will be designed and built together with the inhabitants of the orphanage, so that a long-term maintenance by locals will be ensured. The children will learn the skills and acquire the knowledge necessary so that they will have the chance to find work in this field. In a third step, we plan to extend the project in collaboration with larger institutions like WHO or the German Embassy in Cambodia and, eventually, try to implement it on a larger scale throughout the country.
