| The Order in Singapore The Canossian Sisters first set foot in Singapore in December 1894. They had come from Macau to run the girls' school at the request of the Portugese Mission in Singapore. This was to become the present St Anthony's Canossian Convent Primary and Secondary schools. An Orphanage and Boarding School was opened by the Canossian Sisters in 1895. It had 8 boarders and 5 poor orphans who were affectionately cared for. In keeping with their foundress' spirit of charity, the Sisters started St Joseph's Home for the Aged which was officially opened in 1978. It provides shelter and physical care for the aged and also caters to their spiritual and psychological needs. Today, the Canossian Sisters form one of the largest religious communities in Singapore engaged in various ministries. |
