  Canossaville Children’s Home

Canossaville Children’s Home was first established as an orphanage in 1941. Its aim was to provide care and attention to male and female orphans. In later years, it became a home for girls from single-parent families and troubled homes. Today, the home has a Residential Care Services and Student Care Centre which provides an environment conducive for the children’s development through discipline, academic help and emotional support.

The residential care services can accommodate up to 30 residents. The duration of the stay for residents varies from case to case, and may be from 6 months to several years. Residents are taught basic self-help and housekeeping skills to prepare them for re-integration with the family or for independent living. They are also supported in their academic studies and personal development. This service is normally open only to girls.

In 1983, the Student Care Centre (previously known as Before and After School Care Service) was introduced to cater to the rising numbers of school-going children being left unsupervised at home during the day. Most of the children come from single-parent low-income families. The service is open to both boys and girls. Children using the service are mainly females and come from Canossian schools as well as neighbourhood government schools. Educational levels range from Kindergarten

through Secondary Four. The majority of the children are between the ages of 6 to 12 years.

Canossaville Children's Home engages the children in a variety of programmes which includes:
  Support and Education Supervision
Total Learning for Children and Language Care
  Rainbows Programme
  Shared Reading
  Moral and Value Education
  Self-help and Housekeeping Skills Development
  Group and Individual Counselling
  Enrichment Courses
  Recreational/Outdoor Play
  Parenting Skills Workshop

Support and Education Services
The main activity of the children in the daytime is to complete the homework set by their schoolteachers and to work towards progressively high grades. Children are encouraged to be autonomous learners, and helped to develop habits of a healthy work ethic, personal responsibility and sound time management.

Total Learning for Children and Language Care
This is a support programme for children who are facing specific or general learning difficulties in school and are unable to progress without individualized help. Each child on the TLC programme is assessed before being assigned to learning skill stations. At these stations, they have the chance to practise and improve the specific learning areas they have difficulty in. As and when required, language class is conducted for pre-schoolers and Primary 1 children who require coaching in basic literary skills.

Rainbows Programme
The Rainbows Programme is a series of group activity sessions for children up to age 12 that teaches management skills like adjustment to grief, overcoming fears and a sense of insecurity. This programme is open to children who have experienced the loss or separation from a parent or significant person in their lives.

Shared Reading
Pre-schoolers and early school-aged children are assisted and encouraged to develop a love for reading and familiarity with the printed word through half-hourly sessions of shared reading with a reading buddy. The frequency of these sessions depends on the need of the child.

Moral and Value Education
Time is also set aside weekly in building up the children's awareness of values and moral issues. This is usually carried out through story-telling, review of current events and audio-visuals. Liturgical celebrations like Lent, Easter, Christmas and Canossian Saints' Day as well as celebrations of the children's birthdays, Teachers' Day, Children's Day, Mothers' Day, Fathers' Day and Grandparents' Day are also various ways of imparting values and morals to the children.

Self-help and Housekeeping Skills Development
All the children at Canossaville are encouraged to learn and practise self-help and housekeeping skills from a very early age. This is to help them support their single parents at home and provide them with opportunities for character formation. Children who are sufficiently mature and responsible are given opportunities to experience sheltered work training during the semester holidays. Through close monitoring by the staff and weekly feedback from their workplace, they are helped to develop sound habits of discipline and positive work attitudes.

Group and Individual Counselling
Children who have unresolved emotional or psychological needs are identified for regular counselling, either on an individual or group basis.

Enrichment Courses
These are provided ad hoc as and when talented volunteers in various creative, cultural or sports activities are able to offer their professional expertise in training the children. Some courses that have been organized include Abacus, Music, Dance, Art & Craft, Speech & Drama and Sports.

Recreational/Outdoor Play
The home is well equipped with a turfed field and attractive playground and sports equipment. Children are encouraged to play outdoors. There are opportunities too for them to develop skills in table tennis, badminton and athletics.

Parenting Skills Workshop
This is organized for parents who are interested in improving their parenting and child management skills. Useful tips are imparted in a light-hearted manner through role-plays, demonstrations and review of cases.
