Franciscan Missionaries of Mary (FMM)

  Mission
The FMM Sisters choose to share in the life of the people to whom they are sent. Prayer and witnessing to the Gospel form the main focus of our lives. They collaborate with those who seek the truth, the empowerment of women especially those underprivileged, the promotion of Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation, so making real the Reign of God.

  The International Order
Helene de Chappotin was the foundress of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. In April 1856, during a retreat, she first experienced a call from God to a life of total consecration. In 1860, she entered the Poor Clares but ill health forced her to leave. When she recovered in 1864, she entered the Sisters of Marie Reparatrix, in Paris, where she received the name Mary of the Passion and was subsequently sent on mission to India.

In 1876, a series of difficult circumstance led her and 20 other sisters to leave the Congregation of Marie Reparatrix. In 1877, she founded the Missionaries of Mary which became a part of the Franciscan family in 1882 and was then known as Franciscan Missionaries of Mary.

FMM Sisters live in international communities throughout the world and are active in 76 countries today.

Franciscan Missionaries of Mary in Singapore
Mother Marie Chrysanthe and three others were the first FMM Sisters to come to Singapore sent by the FMM Mother House in Rome to set up a mission here. They were welcomed by Archbishop Michael Olcomendy on 1 May 1953.

In September, they bought a house set amidst lush greenery and tembusu trees at Holland Road which became their convent and named it, Maris Stella (Mary Star of the Sea). The Sisters opened Maris Stella Kindergarten in 1954 in response to the need for preschool education. Today it is ranked among the top 10 kindergartens in Singapore. Maris Stella Kindergarten has also provided preschool education for special needs children for over 15 years.

Hai Sing Catholic School (“Hai Sing” means “Star of the Sea” in Mandarin) was founded by the FMM in 1959 for girls in rural Ponggol. It relocated to Pasir Ris New Town in 1990 and is now a co-educational school.

The FMM Sisters have also been involved in community services since 1965.

APEX Day Rehabilitation Centre For Elderly
This project is a collaboration of the FMM Sisters with the Association of Apex Clubs of Singapore for the last 20 years and more. Daily 4 FMM Sisters join the team of dedicated staff and helpful volunteers in providing rehabilitative and medical services to the frail and disabled elderly. Located at Bukit Merah View, the Centre is presently operating at full capacity with more than fifty-eight patients on register.

  FILODEP
Filipino Ongoing Development Programme was officially launched on November 6, 1988 at the FMM Community compound at 49 Holland Road to take care of a small group of Filipino domestic workers during their days off. FILODEP has developed significantly since then to offering certified courses in hair-dressing, tailoring, cooking, baking, etc. These certificate programmes were introduced to help these workers develop certain skills for their future when they return to their own country. FILODEP has also opened its doors to include workers from Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Myanmar and aims to attend to their psychological, emotional, intellectual and spiritual needs.

  Tampines New Horizon Centre
This Centre is one of the few under the Alzheimer’s Disease Association which provides quality care to those with dementia and their caregivers. Sr Rosa Lim volunteers her service half a day on a daily basis to help the elderly patients who have physical and cognitive difficulties with group sessions such as cooking, art and craft, flower arrangement and gardening, or just simply being a companion to listen and interact
with them.

  Lions Befrienders Service Association (Singapore)
Sr Maria Lee is the coordinator in our collaboration with Lions Befrienders to provide caregiving services for elderly staying in the one room apartment at Taman Ho Swee since February 2000. Presently, the elderly have been relocated to Lower Delta Road and Havelock Road. However, they still continue to receive support and help with their daily needs such as food rations, visits to Hospitals etc. The elderly and needy families are further supported by the FMM Community that resides in the vicinity. The community ensures that the elderly are able to resource help for their various needs.
