Missionaries of Charity

  Mission
To quench the infinite thirst of Jesus – by labouring at the salvation and sanctification of the poorest of the poor – the unwanted, unloved, lonely, abandoned and homeless; To proclaim the Word of God by our prayers and spiritual work of mercy.

  The International Order
The Missionaries of Charity was established in 1950 by Mother Teresa of Calcutta. She joined and took the vows with the Loreto Sisters in 1928. For 20 years, she was at work in education in the St. Mary’s High School, which was mostly for middle class children. Then on 10 September 1946, while going by train to Darjeeling for a spiritual retreat, Mother Teresa experienced a call to renounce everything and to follow Christ into the slums, to serve the poorest of the poor.

She left the Loreto Sisters in 1948 and helped the poor whilst living among them. The first group was about 12, some of whom were her former students, by the time the congregation was established. Today, the Sisters are active in 131 countries.

The Order in Singapore
Mother Teresa first visited Singapore in 1976. In 1982, Archbishop Gregory Yong invited her to set up a Missionaries of Charity home in Singapore. The first Missionaries of Charity Sisters arrived in 1986. They visited poor families and helped the sick and destitute at the Woodlands Aged Home and Pelangi Home.

The Sisters later set up their first home, the Madonna Home, at an

old community centre at Irving Road, Paya Lebar. In 1987 they opened the Gift of Love Home in Punggol for the destitute and elderly of any faith, and eventually moved to Marymount Centre, Thomson Road, in December 1998.

  Gift of Love Home
Inspired by Mother Teresa, the Missionaries of Charity bring the love of Christ to the poor and destitute in Singapore, many of whom are neglected by their children. The Sisters, supported by volunteers, encourage the residents with hope and plenty of smiles.
