Jesuits (Society of Jesus)

  Mission
The Jesuit community in Singapore takes its inspiration from the Formula of the Institute of the Society of Jesus – to strive especially for the defence and propagation of the faith and for the progress of souls in Christian life and doctrine. Being servants on Christ’s mission, they involve themselves corporately as “friends in the Lord” in ministries of the Word of interiority and of sacramental service; teaching catechism, doctrine and morals; giving the Spiritual Exercises to lay and religious alike; reconciling the estranged and facilitating works of mercy; and formation of younger men.

  The International Order
The Society of Jesus was founded by Saint Ignatius Loyola in 1540. Designated by him "The Company of Jesus" to indicate its true leader and its soldier spirit, the title was Latinized into "Societas Jesu". In addition to their vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, Jesuits take a fourth vow, that of obedience to the pope in mission, pledging to go where he sends them. Today, the Jesuits are engaged in ministries in about 112 countries.

Early in 1537 Ignatius together with his nine companions decided to go to Rome to put themselves at the disposal of the Holy Father. This group was united by a common passion to serve God’s people and they called themselves “The Company of Jesus”. At that time, they focused on education and missionary works. Today, their work is mainly on education and intellectual contributions, as well as missionary work and ministry in human rights and social justice.

Ignatius developed the “Spiritual Exercises”, which are a systematic set of notes of the deep spiritual experiences of Ignatius as a lay person. These notes are carefully organized into a programme of prayer that is today experienced during a retreat. These “Spiritual Exercises” progressively free a person from his or her attachments in life and lead him or her to develop a very intimate relationship with God.

The Order in Singapore
The first Jesuits in Singapore were missionaries expelled from China. Fr James Kearney, an American, became editor of the Malayan Catholic News. The first Jesuit community was set up by Fr Patrick Joy, who obtained the necessary money and built Kingsmead Hall, a hostel for students mainly from Malaysia, who were attending the Teacher Training College in Singapore. It was opened in November 1954.

When the hostel closed, Kingsmead Hall then became the Centre for Ignatian Spirituality and Counselling in 1990. One wing was reserved for the Jesuit Novitiate and the other for the Jesuit community residence. At the request of then Archbishop Michael Olcomendy, the church and parish of St. Ignatius was formed and completed in February 1961.
