The Jesuit Refugee Service is an international Catholic organization and a ministry of the Society of Jesus with the mission to accompany, serve and defend the rights of refugees and forcibly displaced people.
JRS provides assistance to refugees in refugee camps, to people displaced within their own country, to asylum seekers in cities and those held in detention centers. The mission of JRS is |
| |
motivated by the gospel teachings of building a kingdom based on love, peace and justice. JRS embraces all who are persecuted because of race, religion, membership in social or political groups; to the victims of armed conflicts, erroneous economic policy or natural disasters; and to internally displaced persons, that is, civilians who are forcibly uprooted from their homes by the same type of violence as refugees but who do not cross national frontiers. |
| |
| |
The Singapore branch of JRS was formed in late 1999. It undertakes some key programmes and services as follow: |
| |
Companionship
Volunteers of JRS Singapore accompany the refugees and internally displaced persons in Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Nepal by visiting them and providing them with spiritual and emotional support.
Service to Refugees
The refugees are served through several programmes to meet |
| |
their physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs. This is done in collaboration with the local JRS organizations in the countries where the refugees are residing. |
| |
Defending Rights
JRS advocates for just and generous policies and programmes for the benefit of victims of forced displacement in order that those who have been made vulnerable by their exile can receive the assistance, support and protection they need until a durable solution to their plight can be achieved.
