“Making a difference…”
Most elderly couples would be looking forward to their retirement
and a more relaxing pace to their life probably having tea and meeting
up with friends. However, for Jeffrey and Nancy Chelliah, both in
their 60’s, retirement just means more time for volunteer
work.
“It never crossed our minds to reduce or stop our volunteer
work.” said Jeffrey, a retired teacher of about 40 years,
“It’s because it brings us much joy being able to work
together trying to help younger couples to grow their relationship.”
Jeffrey and Nancy have been volunteers of the family life group
at the Church of the Holy Family for the past 14 years, preparing
couples for marriage. Both are also presenters at Choice, journeying
with adults for the past 24 years. In addition, Jeffrey is a school
counsellor and also a Eucharistic minister. They are also active
in their neighbourhood attending social gatherings and giving support
to their neighbours such as attending wakes and visiting them when they are in hospitals. “My volunteer work has brought me great pleasure especially
the wonderful friends that I have made along the way.” said
Jeffrey.
They both agree that volunteering has had a profound effect on
them. “The benefits of volunteer work are not only for the
one who receives. Sometimes when you’re down and you see what
you’re doing having a positive effect on others, it just brightens
up your day just knowing that you can make a difference in someone
else’s life.”
“And we would like to share this joy with other couples and
help them find their calling to serve in either the church or the
community.” |
