When the tsunami struck in December 2004, Edwin admired the spirit of the many volunteers and had the urge to volunteer as well but hesitated. However, in the later months he responded to an appeal by ACCT to build houses in Banda Aceh (Indonesia), one of the worst hit cities. There was mass destruction everywhere.

“I was touched by the resilience of the Acehnese,” said Edwin. “Despite their ordeal, they refused to let the tsunami dampen their courage and desire to live and move on with their lives. They were full of smiles.”

Edwin's team was to work on building two houses. Even without the proper tools, they worked through heavy rain with the locals who were touched by their enthusiasm. This went a long way in overcoming their reservation that Christians were coming to help and not to preach. Indeed the compassion and care between the volunteers and locals helped overcome the boundaries between the people of different religions. At the end, Edwin feels inspired by the spirit of the Acehnese.

“I've learnt to cherish my loved ones more dearly and have never felt closer to God.” he revealed. “I've gained more than I've given so I hope that more people will be encouraged to help the Acehnese to rebuild their lives.”
